Overview

The M81824/1-1 is a military-standard, environmentally sealed, solderless butt splice, a flight-critical component for creating permanent, high-reliability wire-to-wire connections. Specified for use by Textron Aviation and universally adopted across the aerospace industry, this is not a generic splice; it is an engineered connector designed to provide a durable, moisture-proof, and electrically stable wire junction. It features a nickel-plated copper crimp barrel housed within a transparent, heat-shrinkable insulation sleeve with an integral sealing adhesive. The M81824/1-1 is the professional standard for airworthy wire repairs and modifications.

Key Features

  • Environmentally Sealed: The outer heat-shrinkable sleeve is made from a tough, transparent polymer and is internally coated with a thermal adhesive sealant. When heated, the sleeve shrinks and the adhesive melts, flowing to create a complete, waterproof, and fuel-resistant seal around the wire insulation.

  • High-Reliability Crimp Connection: Utilizes a seamless, nickel-plated copper crimp barrel. When crimped with the specified mil-spec tool, it creates a cold-weld connection that is stronger than the wire itself, providing a low-resistance, gas-tight electrical path that is immune to vibration.

  • Transparent for Inspection: The outer insulation sleeve is transparent, allowing for a complete visual inspection of the wire crimp after installation. This is a critical quality assurance feature that ensures the wires are properly inserted and crimped.

  • Wide Wire Gauge Range: The "-1" dash number is specifically designed to accommodate a wire gauge range of 26 AWG to 20 AWG, making it a versatile splice for common avionics and electrical system wiring.

  • Military Standard Certified: Manufactured in strict accordance with the SAE-AS81824/1 specification, guaranteeing its material, performance, and dimensional characteristics are certified for the most demanding aerospace and defense applications.

Aircraft Compatibility

The M81824/1-1 is a universal electrical system component used on all modern aircraft for permanent wire splicing, including the full range of Textron Aviation (Cessna, Beechcraft, Hawker) platforms.

  • Common Applications:

    • Avionics Installation & Repair: The standard method for performing permanent splices in avionics and instrument wiring harnesses.

    • Airframe Wire Repair: The approved method for repairing a damaged wire in an airframe harness in accordance with standard practices (e.g., FAA AC 43.13-1B).

    • Electrical System Modification: Used to create reliable junctions when modifying or adding new electrical circuits to the aircraft.

Applications

The M81824/1-1 is the gold standard for creating safe and durable wire connections:

  • Permanent Wire Splicing: Creates a permanent, in-line splice between two wires.

  • Environmental Protection: Essential for splices located in areas that may be exposed to moisture, condensation, or fluids, such as in the bilge, wheel wells, or firewall-forward.

Why Choose M81824/1-1?

An improper wire splice can be a source of intermittent failures, system malfunctions, and even in-flight fires. The M81824/1-1 is an engineered system that, when installed correctly, creates a connection that is as strong and reliable as an unbroken wire. Its environmentally sealed design is critical for preventing corrosion of the copper conductor, which is a leading cause of electrical failures over time. For any airworthy electrical repair, the use of a certified, environmentally sealed splice is not just a best practice—it's often a requirement.

The M81824/1-1 splice provides a multi-layered protection system. The first step is the mechanical crimp, which uses a calibrated tool to cold-weld the wire conductors to the nickel-plated copper barrel, forming a highly reliable electrical bond. The second step is the application of heat to the outer sleeve. The heat-shrinkable polymer sleeve shrinks tightly around the wire, providing primary strain relief and abrasion resistance. Simultaneously, the thermoplastic adhesive sealant on the inside of the sleeve melts and flows, filling any microscopic voids around the wire insulation. As it cools, the adhesive forms a tenacious bond, creating a complete barrier against moisture, hydraulic fluid, and other contaminants, thus preventing corrosion and ensuring the long-term reliability of the connection.

Note: This is a flight-critical electrical component. Installation must be performed by a certified A&P or AME mechanic or avionics technician using the specified, calibrated crimping tool and a controlled-temperature heat gun. Use of uncalibrated tools or excessive heat can result in a faulty connection or damage to the wire insulation.
